Summary: Certain foods like dairy, fried or high-fat items, cruciferous vegetables, and ultra-processed products can trigger bloating and digestive discomfort. Managing portions, choosing easier-to-digest preparations, and eating whole foods may help you improve digestion.

You eat healthy food every day, feel good about your food choice, but sometimes you feel heavy, and your pants feel a little tighter. Sound familiar? Actually, some foods can cause digestive symptoms, especially if you live with certain health conditions.

Sometimes, bloating can be caused by gas, digestive issues, or dietary factors. But when should you work with a nutritionist for bloating and digestive problems? In this guide, I, Helen Buchan, a nutritional therapist, will discuss some common foods that can cause bloating.

What Foods Can Cause Bloating and Digestive Problems

Dairy Products

Many people experience gas and bloating when they consume dairy products. Lactose intolerance (the inability to digest lactose) can be the cause of this issue. Dairy products are good sources of bone-building nutrients like calcium and vitamin D. Many people who have lactose intolerance can still handle a certain amount of lactose. So, you can try consuming small servings of milk with meals.

Fried Or High-Fat Foods

Fats spend more time in the stomach. They trigger acid reflux. It takes a significant amount of time for the body to break down fats. When you consume them in high amounts, it can lead to bloating and gas. Plus, the colon produces more liquid. As a result, the stools become loose and watery. Replace fatty, fried foods with lean meats that you can grill, boil, bake, or poach.

Cruciferous Vegetables

There are various cruciferous vegetables available, such as broccoli, cabbage, radish, and mustard greens. However, these foods are also good sources of fibre, making them healthy eating items. However, they can also cause digestive issues like gas and bloating, especially when you eat in high amounts. Try to boil, sauté, or roast these vegetables to make them easier to digest. You can also opt for lower-fibre vegetables, like carrots, mushrooms, and cooked green beans.

Ultra-Processed Foods

Ultra-processed foods contain high amounts of added sugar, starch, oil, and fat. These foods can also contain artificial flavours, colours, and preservatives to extend their shelf life. Common examples are fast food, salty snacks, cookies, cakes, frozen meals, and soft drinks. Try to eat cooked meals and prioritise whole foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to increase fibre intake.
